The jury is still out whether paying hospitals, doctors and other providers what constitutes to be a flat, or bundled, payment for a set episode of care like stroke, hip or knee replacements will ultimately save money for Medicare and bring profits to providers.

But the bundled payment program is also designed to help patients recover more quickly and reduce the chances for developing a health care-acquired infection or medical error.
